Too many apples, not enough ideas?

What: Community juicing event

When: Saturday September 9th 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Where: Fulton Place Community League

Why: we all have too many apples, juicing is the easiest way to manage the bulk!

What to bring: Your apples (see notes), and food safe containers to take juice back with you

What will be provided: Apple grinder, apple presses, people to help manage the process

Cost: free

Apple notes:

-please do not bring dropped apples - they increase risk of contamination into the juice (an apple that you picked that bounced off the ground is fine so long as skin isn’t broken; long fallen fruit is the problem)

-apples can be left in a basket in a cool covered location for a week to a few weeks ahead of the juicing event - it helps them convert sugars and dewater a bit so the juice is tastier (I use laundry baskets and leave them in the garage)

-small crab apples are more work than they are worth and they add a lot of bitter; so 1.5” to 2” fruit or bigger is better

FAQ:

Q. Can I have juice if I don’t bring apples?

  1. This would need to wait until the end of the event.  If we have lots more apples brought than people want juice back, we will give away juice; if everyone who brings fruit wants all their juice, then no.

Q. What do you do with the juice?

  1. This is up to the person who takes the juice - you can can it for soft cider (non alcoholic) or you can brew it into hard cider (alcoholic), or you could try your hand at making apple cider vinegar
