About the Little Lungs First Aid Course

Classroom

Certified Red Cross instructors demonstrate, share slides, and facilitate learning activities among participants. Each participant will finish this course with the confidence and skills needed to be an outstanding babysitter.

Description

All babysitters should be prepared in order to keep themselves, and the children they watch, safe. The Babysitting course allows youth ages 11-15 to learn from certified Red Cross instructors. Even more, the course is more comprehensive than other babysitting courses, ensuring you have a well-rounded knowledge on what to do in case of an emergency. The course has been updated with new science and new ways of learning so that everything you learn is relevant to today’s world. Instructors will teach you how to manage difficult behaviour, will provide important content on how to be a leader and a professional, and will give you an in-depth run down on necessary First Aid skills to make sure you are prepared for anything and everything.

The course is taught in a 7-hour classroom session.

After successfully completing the course, students will receive a Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Certificate that will make their resumé stand out from the competition and can give them the confidence they need for babysitting. Students will also receive the Babysitting Course Manual PDF so that they can access the information at any time!

First aid content covered:

  • The three C’s to an emergency - Check, Call, Care. Emergency situations can be stressful and it’s hard to think straight. These three steps provide a solid structure for how you should act in an emergency situation, can help you minimize harm, and possibly save a life!

  • Glove removal - In an emergency situation, it is important to wear gloves to protect you and the victim. Even more so, it is crucial for caretakers and children to know how to properly remove gloves in order to avoid contamination and the spread of germs.

  • Recovery position - This is a LIFE SAVING position that everyone needs to know. If you are in an emergency with an unresponsive person, putting them in this position keeps their airway clear and open so they avoid choking on their tongue, vomit, or fluid.

  • Conscious choking - Breathing emergencies such as choking are a leading cause of injury-related death to Canadian children. Learn the proper techniques to save a baby, child, adult, or yourself from choking.

  • CPR - Otherwise known as “Cardiopulmonary resuscitation”, is a life-saving technique that helps maintain blood flow to the brain and heart in an emergency situation. This drastically increases the chance of survival in those who suffer from cardiac arrest and is the best approach to unblock the airway of a person who is choking. In our course, you will learn when to use it, the proper steps, and proper hand placement.

  • Asthma - More than 3 million Canadians have this chronic condition. Asthma can be characterized by cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and wheezing. In our course, you will learn the functions of an inhaler and spacer and how to use it in order to help someone who lives with this condition in an emergency.

  • Anaphylaxis - You will learn about this severe allergic reaction to things such as venom, food, medication, bee stings, and more as around 2.5 million Canadians live with anaphylaxis. You will also learn how to use an EpiPen – which is used when someone suffers from a life-threatening allergic reaction.

  • Poison - In 2020, it was reported that unintentional poisoning surpassed motor-vehicle collisions as a major cause of preventable death in Canada. So many household products, such as cleaning agents, personal care and topical products, and pesticides, are among the top ten substances responsible for poisoning exposures annually. In our course, we will teach you what to do in a situation where you or someone in your supervision is exposed to or ingests poison.

  • Insect stings - Summertime means the bugs are out! Our course will teach you how to reduce pain, swelling, itching, how to remove stingers, and how to know if emergency care is needed.

  • Wound care - With our course, you will learn how to treat minor cuts, scrapes, how to remove splinters from yourself and others, the best treatment for a nosebleed and burns, the best way to treat bumps and bruises, and what to do if someone is experiencing life threatening bleeding. Proper wound care prevents infection and other complications, and also helps speed up the healing process with less scarring.

  • Head, neck and back injuries - You will learn what to do if someone falls off a bike, falls down the stairs, or any other accident where the head, neck and back are injured. All head injuries are considered serious because a hard blow to the head can injure the brain or spinal cord even when there are no visible signs of trauma to the scalp or face. Incorrect care can worsen the injury, result in paralysis, or death. It is important to know the proper steps and technique to avoid worst case scenarios.

  • Broken bones - If someone accidentally breaks a bone under your supervision, it is important to know what to do as improper treatment can worsen the injury. Our course teaches you proper steps and methods to caring for a broken bone to minimize further harm to the victim.

  • Seizures - Seizures can be defined as abnormal electrical activity in the brain that happens quickly and suddenly. If someone experiences seizures more than once, they have epilepsy. Around 300,000 Canadians are affected by epilepsy and 60% of newly diagnosed patients are young children or senior citizens. With our course, you will learn the proper methods and strategies that can help someone who is having a seizure that will ensure their safety and well-being.
